Sammy, the female juvenile whale shark that was captured off the coast of Jebel Ali in August 2007, has finally been released back into the wild. It had been kept in captivity for eighteen months on display at the Atlantis aquariums, prompting calls for its release from activists and concerned organizations.

“After several months of planning, Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai has returned a female whale shark to the waters of the Arabian Gulf from where she was rescued. The Atlantis Fish Husbandry Team utilized their experience and skill to save the animal in compliance with all CITIES regulations.” (from a press release)

According to the hotel, the long wait was required to ensure the shark’s survival upon release. In a statement it argued that seasonal elements affecting water temperature, salinity and migratory patterns were perfect for enhancing her chances of survival in the open ocean.

“The seasonal elements affecting water temperature, salinity and migratory patterns were perfect for enhancing her survival in the open ocean,” said the hotel.

The whale shark has been tagged and the Atlantis Fish Husbandry Team will continue to monitor its progress.
