Oscar Nominations for 2010
The Oscar Nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards are finally in and it seems like there are clear favorites and a few surprises on the list. While there are ten nominations for best picture, the battle this year will be between James Cameron’s super-hit Avatar and Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker–which is making a name for itself lately.
Both, Cameron and Bigelow are also nominated for the best director category, and a total of nine nominations each. Avatar has already won best drama and director awards at the Golden Globes, but The Hurt Locker beat it at the Directors Guild of America Awards. Head to head completion indeed.
Other entries to note are the addition of low-budget yet high quality drama District 9, as well as the animated film Up.
Nominations are held through voting by the 6,000 strong members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The 82nd Academy Awards will be held at 5pm Pacific Standard Time (PST) on 7 March 2010 and broadcast live around the world from the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles. This year, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin (who starred together in It’s Complicated) will host the show.
Last time a James Cameron movie was up for best picture was Titanic, which won for best picture at the 70th Academy Awards on 23 March 1998. That day recorded the greatest ever viewership of the awards show by a wide margin–57.25 million viewers. Will we do better this time?
