Haiti Earthquake – How you can help
A devestating 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti on Tuesday 12 January, causing widespread death and destruction. Over three million people who reside in the area have been affected, while it is estimated that thousands have perished. This is a catastrophe.
Homes, schools, hospitals and entire communities have been reduced to rubble. Relief workers are overwhelmed in an effort to rescue those who may still be trapped in the aftermath. The city is without electricity or running water, and the telephone network is out of order. Even the UN headquarters has collapsed, leaving thousands of people without shelter or food.
It is our responsibility to help out fellow human beings in need. These people desperately need our help.
Here’s what you can do NOW:
UNICEF
UNICEF is deploying clean water and sanitation supplies, therapeutic foods, medical supplies and temporary shelter to Jacmel and Port-au-Prince.
CARE
CARE plans to start food distributions using stocks of high-protein biscuits from CARE warehouses in Haiti. CARE has 133 staff who are on the ground coordinating with U.N. agencies and other aid organizations to gather more detailed information about the damage and will rapidly scale up response based on those assessments.
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
Red Cross volunteers in Haiti are currently assisting the injured and supporting hospitals whose do not have enough capacity to deal with this emergency. Red Cross Red Crescent emergency appeal seeks 10 million Swiss francs for relief efforts in Haiti.
Medecins Sans Frontieres (UAE)
MSF teams have setup clinics to treat the injured after facilities are damaged.
