As 2009 comes to a close we’ve gone through the huge number of tracks released this year to single out the best of the best. There were numerous notable tracks across the spectrum of genres. We saw some brilliant albums from Animal Collective, Mos Def, Dirty Projectors, and Bat for Lashes along with popular singles by Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, and Jay Sean.

The list below is of the 25 best tracks of 2009. Compiling such a list is a very subjective exercise. It’s not meant to please everyone and it’s our opinion of the most noteworthy songs of the year. We judge them on the basis of originality, lasting appeal, commercial success, and something called spunk that we just can’t verbalize.

We’re counting down from 25 to 1 over the next five pages and we’ve got the music video–or at least the audio–for each. So, check out the list and if you think the top 25 should look different, then SAY SO in the comments below.

Our hope is that at the very least we have a hand in introducing some new music to you. Enjoy.

25. Empire State Of Mind — Jay Z featuring Alicia Keys

Putting this track in the top 25 for the year may be questionable if we were only judging it for its originality or composition, but there is no denying Jay Z’s Midas touch or this track’s commercial success.

24. Meet Me On The Equinox — Death Cab for Cutie

This Grammy-nominated American indie rock band has had a following for years, but this lead single for the New Moon motion picture soundtrack put them on the map in a big way.

The Roots are back with a new upcming album of the same name. Their first single from the album, also entitled How I Got Over is an instant classic.
