Make your own sandwiches at City Deli Cafe
Sometimes I just have this big itch to eat a fine sandwich. By “fine sandwich” I mean one that I savor with every bite. Where the bread is still warm and nicely toasted. Where the juicy tomatoes stay firm until I bite into them and then burst with flavor. Where the mustard doesn’t overpower and appears in mild undertones throughout the meal. Where the cheese has melted perfectly on top of the meat. Mmm…yum.
Fortunately, there is a small list of establishments that serve such saliva inducing fare across Dubai.
One establishment that comes close is the City Deli Cafe located across from Geant in Ibn Battuta shopping mall. They carry a decent and eclectic combination of sandwich choices on the menu as well as a make your own sandwich option. In addition, you can choose from a small range of salads and smoothies.
We tried the roast beef and the chiken breast sandwiches and topped them off with the banana walnut smoothie.
- Warm toasted bread: check
- Juicy onions and tomatoes: check
- Just the right amount of mustard and mayo or other dressing: check
- Hot melted cheese: check
- Adequate portion of meat: well yes in the chicken, maybe less so on the roast beef sandwich
The chicken breast sandwich was a delight with a thousand island dressing. The roast beef was tasty but it would have worked better with some horse radish sauce and larger quantity of layered roast beef.
However, the banana walnut smoothie was pleasantly delightful. Until we ordered the second one which had far too much crushed ice and stole the flavor.
The City Deli Cafe certainly provides fresh and tasty food and is an ideal place to grab lunch while at the mall shopping or catching an afternoon movie. It suffers a little in terms of foot fall of customers only because its somewhat removed from the rest of the food court.
The best part is that you can have them make a sandwich to your specifications, so you can exactly control those essential ingredients that go into making the perfect sandwich.
