Dubai’s Fleamarket is an awesome place to find unique trinkets and make new friends.

Sooner or later we all tire of Dubai’s endless array of shopping malls as well as the monotony inside them. Occasionally we yearn for a more down-to-Earth experience far removed from the glam of designer labels and artificial snow slopes. Fortunately for us, this occasion comes every first Saturday of the month in Al Safa park. The Dubai Flemarket is a great opportunity to get outside, take in the sounds of some local bands, meet interesting people, and go treasure hunting.

About seventy to a hundred enterprising individuals (and a few individually owned companies) setup stalls prior to 9 am selling a variety of goods from used clothing and shoes, to books, lamps, jewelry, and hand-made greeting cards. This is a great opportunity to find unwanted gifts-like a sterling silver table lamp base that would look perfect on your side table. Or a pendant that would look perfect with your outfit. Or a pair of used Jimmy Choo heels.

Ok–that last one is unlikely.

The best part is the interaction with the people selling their goods and others like you buying or casually browsing. There’s a big variety of people from all backgrounds who you would not normally have a chance to talk too.

If you plan on exhibiting your goods, fill out the registration form at their website. The standard package is 220 AED which includes a table and two chairs. But book early because available space sells out fast. And arrive early on the day of the Fleamarket because table assignment is on a first come first served basis. It’s also advisable to that you visit the Fleamarket prior to signing up to exhibit.

For visitors, the best time to go is from 11 am to 1 pm. The area of the market is almost entirely covered by shade from palm trees, but refreshments are available onsite, including home-made Italian ice. Nevertheless, bring a hat, sunglasses, cash, and a friendly smile.

You never know what treasure you may find in someone’s unwanted goods. Or you may just stumble upon your new best friend.
